Capacity development is a core component of our work that focuses on equipping organisations to design and implement policy engagement initiatives. Our capacity development interventions seek to directly respond to what CSOs, in collaboration with ZGF, identify as capacity development needs of their organisation. This support is part of the contractual obligations for organisations awarded grants and is thus only provided to CSOs that have running contracts with ZGF.
Our approach to providing capacity development support recognises that both budding and more developed CSOs have capacity related needs, thus ZGF aims at boosting their effectiveness and expertise within their specific context. Interventions can range from enhancing basic management and administrative skills to specialised training and networking. In this approach capacity development is not a one-off intervention, but a process which includes engaging organisations to assess needs, formulating a capacity development action plan, implementing the plan and evaluating the intervention.
Tools of Capacity Development
Our capacity development tools include building the skills through training courses, hands on, tailored coaching and mentoring support for individualised organisational learning. ZGF has developed toolkits focusing on different thematic areas to enhance the sustainability of our capacity development support.
The Stages of Capacity Development
While a formalised capacity development plan is only established when organisations are awarded a grant, ZGF’s grant application process itself contains opportunities for capacity development. This is because of the up to five opportunities to resubmit grant applications that each organisation has during the application stage. At each re-submission the applicant can incorporate targeted feedback from ZGF on how to improve their proposal.
