Emerging from nothing: The birth of ZGF’s social enterprise
In the face of shrinking external donor funding and a corresponding increase in demand for civil society support, especially capacity development and financial independence, the need for sustainability has never been greater. The Zambian Governance Foundation has established a new and exciting social enterprise initiative to ensure that ZGF’s support to civil society in Zambia is ongoing and allow for flexibility on the initiatives supported.
The social enterprise has two key areas of wok which build on ZGF’s existing work and aligns closely with our values and mission. These outlined below.
Services to help organisations function better
Leveraging its experience providing capacity development support to civil society ZGF offers a catalogue of affordable courses to both profit and non-profit organisations. These services are around three main areas of work:
Consultancies: ZGF conducts short-term consultancies on areas of work or research where it can leverage its organisational knowledge to support other organisations work. Past work includes short-term research on land governance administration in Zambia and social audits.
Facilities: ZGF offers the use of its boardroom for conferencing and meeting purposes. Offering a centrally located venue with modern equipment and optional caterings services, this reasonably priced venue is available to both civil society or private sector. Capacity development training: ZGF provides a growing list of training in areas such as disability equality; resource mobilisation and knowledge management. These fee-based training are applicable to organisations in various sectors and provide the opportunity for organisations to strengthen their capacties on ‘soft-skills’ and enhance their operations. Sustainable, affordable solutions for rural communities
Rural communities still make the marjority of Zambia’s growing population. In such communities access to clean affordable energy, water and sanitation is limited but necessary. ZGF works with many organisations that support these communites right to water, energy and even sanitation. ZGF identified an opportunity to not only support these organisations work but also practically meet the communities needs. ZGF has partnered with VITALITE Zambia, a provider of ‘PAYGO’ solar home systems, to enable communities to access affordable and clean lighting solutions. Learn more
